| Gaerlan's Citadel (In Progress) RESTRICTION: Level 20+ The Story So Far... Gaerlan's citadel, having crashed following the titanic battle between Gaerlan and Martine, is now ripe for the attack! Gather together your troops and hunt him down!! Step 0: Preparation The first and last dungeon are populated by tough monsters, buff and bane everything before going into these dungeons. There is a fairly short timer on the individual items in this quest. If you don't turn in the nugget, or the seal pieces within 4 hours, you have to start all over again.
Step 1: Getting There (Updated for October Patch) To start off this quest, you need to go visit the former site of the Essences. At these location, you will now find a dungeon leading down to a boss-monster to defeat who will spawn a portal to the crater and Asheron's Platinum golem. This boss monster is on a re-spawn timer of four hours (November patch change). Here are the locations of the essences (unsure of any level requirements as of yet): | Levels 20-39 | Levels 40-59 | Levels 60-79 | Levels 80+ | | ?? | ?? | ?? | Diamond Golem Sovereign | | | | Lightning Elementals Acidic Diamond Golems Pyreal Golems

Talk to the golem and this is what will be said: Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "This world has suffered too many losses, and I have bore witness to too many of them. No longer. Gaerlan must be stopped." Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "Our futures have been altered by Gaerlan. The time has come to right what he has made wrong. Martine's sacrifice shall not have been made in vain. We will avenge him and see that his gift to us is not wasted." Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "Misfortune begs me tell you that Gaerlan is using some magic to bar me from his citadel. Though I have regained much of my strength from my injuries I am using much to keep his citadel here upon the ground." Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "I have, however, located four Platinum Golems within the citadel. They are slumbering at the moment and need to be awakened. But once they are awake I can communicate with them and learn what they know of this citadel. Then perhaps I can assist you in traversing the several areas in an effort to meet and defeat Gaerlan." Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "Your efforts over the past cycle of the moons has proven invaluable and he is cornered now. Be wary for this will make him dangerous, but you should also know that he is indeed much weaker. Take this." Asheron's Platinum Golem gives you Imbued Pyreal Nugget. Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "The portals into the citadel's inverted ziggurat lay nearby. I have been able to determine the rudimentary difficulty of the areas within and have restricted the entrances to assist you in your task. Find the appropriate portal and enter the ziggurat, find the golem and give the nugget to it. I will speak to you more once this is accomplished."
Once there, he or it will give you an Imbued Pyreal Nugget (no timer on getting these), which you will need to take with you through the Ziggurat dungeon matching your level below (located at 57.2n, 47.8e): | Ziggurat | Lightning | Acid | Fire | Frost | | Levels | 20-39 | 40-59 | 60-79 | 80+ | | Monsters | - Granite Golems

All of the dungeons are laid out basically the same. Head up, up up. You are looking for a Platinum Golem near a portal at the end, which you will hand your Imbued Nugget to. When you give it to it, you will hear: You give Platinum Golem Imbued Pyreal Nugget. Platinum Golem says, "I hear and obey Lord Asheron Realadain." Asheron's voice fills your mind, "You have done well. Now you must pass a set of trials that the citadel itself will place before you. In a sense it lives, as this was the design of the Empyrean from before my years. You must not fail, failure can lead to death. I will ensure that portals are created to assist you should you meet with misadventure."
Now that you have completed the 1st part of the quest, you have been flagged to enter the portals located in the middle of Eastham (they reset and disappear sometimes, not sure what causes them to do so) for your appropriate level. You can either walk through the portal next to the golem, or recall and use the ones in Eastham at any time. If you die during the trials, the Eastham portals will take you back into the dungeon. Step 2: The Riddle The 1st part of the trials consist of a riddle. You will appear in a room with a large head in the middle. Double-click on the head and it will ask you a question. Around the perimeter of the room are a bunch of smaller statues that are all labeled. Double-click on the statue that has the correct answer to your riddle. If you get the answer wrong, you will need to talk to the head again for another riddle. You get three chances and then are booted and have to redo the entire quest again from scratch. Answer the question correctly and you get the first part of the seal, and get portaled to the Rolling Ball of Death dungeon. Here are the riddles and answers I have been able to gather do far: | Question (Thanks to all the replies to my posts on the VNBoards for this info, listed alphabetically) | Answer | | A poor man has too much of me, a wealthy man needs me not, and if you feast upon me you will die. What am I ?? | nothing | | At night they come without being called, but at dawn they are lost without being stolen. What are they? | stars | | I am a room without walls, windows or doors. What am I? | mushroom | | I am void, and absence, I am not a color. What am I? | black | | I can be an old love, but mostly a lost passion. My life grows as you feed me, but when I drink water I die. | Flame | | I never grow, but can become very wide, and everything falls into darkness when I hide. What am I? | eyes | | I pass through the water and never get wet. What am I? | sunlight | | I've legs, and a foot, and also a head. But I cannot think nor move on my own. | bed | | It begins eternity, ends time and space, it rests at the start of every end and the end of every place. What is it?" | E | | It cannot be slain so long as there is a ray, it is inspires the heart to wish for the best, yet exercise caution to not lose this gift for then you shall just be forlorn. What is it? | hope | | It never was, is always to be, none have seen it, but many dream of it, it is the hope of all that live that it shall always come. What is it? | tomorrow | | It waits for none and gauges all, it is eaten by leisure and work the same, it is abundant but there never seems to be enough. What is it? | time | | No sound, no voice, no breath, no sleep, no thought, no sight, no more. What is it? | Death | | The maker want it not, the buyer does not use it, and the user never sees it. | Coffin | | What is it that has one voice but becomes four-footed, two-footed, and three-footed? | Man | | What has no beginning or end, yet binds two together? | ring | | You will break me if you name me. What am I? | silence | | | | | | | | | |
Step 3: The Rolling Balls of Death Ok, now it's time to play Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! This is a simple, but VERY nasty dungeon, and the October patch has changed its dynamic. I will let you know what I find in here as soon as I can. Here is a basic map of the general layout of this place, and where it is safe:
Now, the goal is to kill the door at the end of the hall without being squished by the Rolling Balls of Death. In the 80+ dungeon, we got several archers together, along with a bunch of non-archers we handed and buffed bows for, and went to town on it from the corners. Our door had an insane amount of health, and took probably a total of 4,000 or so arrows and quarrels before it fell. Then it only stayed open for about 5 minutes before resetting. Here is a picture of the door:
Once you knock the door down, there are several chests full of the 2nd puzzle piece. Pick one up and then take the portal to the floor puzzle dungeon. Step 4: The Floor Puzzle You will appear in front of a statue, click on it and it will tell you you must walk the correct path or be trapped here forever. Here is a map of the correct path to take in the level 80+ dungeon (I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WORKS IN THE OTHER DUNGEONS. SOMEONE PLEASE VERIFY THIS.)
In the room on the other side of the puzzle is a lever. Pull the lever and the chests with the 3rd piece, and the portal to the final trial dungeon will appear. Step 5: Reverence When you arrive in this dungeon, double-click on the statue. It will tell you to respect the ceremony. What this means is actually very simple. Walk through the dungeon (Hold down SHIFT to walk instead of run), do not talk to ANYONE, and do NOT go into combat mode. If you do any of the above, the monsters will spawn and whack you good. If someone else has already done this and the monsters are there, RUN through as fast as you can to the final room. Once in the final room, pull the lever. DO NOT MOVE UNTIL THE PORTAL AND CHESTS HAVE APPEARED. I made the mistake of moving and stepping into the portal, and ended up having to do the trials all over again :(. Get the fourth piece out of the chest and leave. Step 6: Return to the Golem Now that you have the four pieces, put them together to make Seal. The timer on picking up the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pieces of the puzzle is 3 hours. This timer is also how long you have to turn them in. There is no timer, however, on getting the 1st piece. Take this back to Asheron's Platinum Golem at 57.7n, 48.4e. Asheron's Platinum Golem will tell you: Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "You have passed the tests of the citadel. If you have the seal in its fragments, assemble them and give them to me. I have been granted the ability to enhance the seal as it must be for your further progression." You give Asheron's Platinum Golem Ornate Seal. Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "He believes this was constructed by the most ancient of the Empyrean people." Asheron's Platinum Golem tells you, "I have been given gems that will portal you onto the citadel. There you should find entrance into the library. They will appear as pillars of a bygone era. Give this seal to the pillars. Once done, you should be transported into the lowest level of the sanctum, located in the tower." Asheron's Platinum Golem gives you Imbued Ornate Seal. Asheron's Platinum Golem gives you Citadel Portal Gem.
Step 6: The Library Now, you can use the Imbued Ornate Seal on the pillars located up in the citadel. When you do so, you will be transported into the library section, with it weird steps and walkways to nothing. Inside this dungeon are also a total of 6 Texts, which can later be translated at the Cragstone library. At the top of one flight of stairs is at least one portal to the final dungeon to fight Gaerlan himself! As the lower level Gaerlan dungeons are beaten, the higher level ones will appear:
Step 7: Defeat Gaerlan! Now you are in the final dungeon. Rebuff and bane everything like you did for the first dungeon. Expect to find the same monsters in here as the first one, with the exception that the elementals will have shifted (Frost to Lightning for the 80+ folks.) There is a simple method to this madness though. Go to the walkway where you can target Gaerlan. Have the mages IMP and VULN the crud out of him. Walk down to one side and lure Gaerlan into the hallway so you don't have to fight him AND the elementals at the same time. Next, use ONLY Slashing/Piercing/Bludgeoning attacks on him. Do not bother with elemental attacks or life drains, as they are useless. If you die, there is now a portal back to the library from Eastham (October patch update).
Once Gaerlan dies, his monsters will die with him, and you will be able to take the portal over to the prize room:
Double click on Gaerlan's Phylacteric Prison to pick up your rewards. You will get a red Elemental Master robe (Black if you got the kill on Gaerlan), Gaerlan's Sword, and one Special Item. You cannot pick up another item for 7 days. This is NOT a complete list, as not all of the rewards have been pulled yet. (The Devs have said it may take up to 6 weeks for all of them to be discovered.) Afterwards, take the exit portal to appear at the top of your citadel and receive your Martine's Robe and Mask.
